SAILING THRIVES IN A POLLUTED KARACHI HARBOUR

Five ‘Friends of Bhit Island’ Celebrate Pakistan’s Independence Day Rounding Up Support at the Neighboring Karachi Yacht Club

Grey skies and rain greeted the 14th of August 2013, but the Parade and Independence Day celebrations went on, dastardly terrorist attacks and threats of societal disruption not withstanding. The Karachi Yacht Club (KYC), picturesque and serene, organized a Sailing Regatta for its ‘Tindals’, the local term for professional sailors employed at the Club to teach and assist aspiring amateur sailor-members and take care of their yachts.

Five ‘Friends of Bhit Island’ (Shehla, Ahmed, Ali, Adil and Moin) spent an exhilarating half day watching the races, playing water polo, and networking with the KYC membership raising support for the fight against marine pollution that has very adversely impacted the populations of the neighboring islands, in particular Bhit Island. Quite a few KYC Tindals are settled in Bhit Island, and it is hoped that the KYC sailor-members and their families and friends will swell the ranks of the ‘Friends of Bhit Island’ and join the fight for a healthy environment.

The Bhit Islanders are amongst Karachi’s oldest inhabitants and trace their roots to over 400 years. Karachi’s transformation into a giant metropolis from a small and quaint fishing village has left deep scars upon this community of fishermen. The discharge directly into the sea of untreated raw sewage, produced by over 20 million uncaring Karachiwalas, has polluted and severely compromised the Bhit Island environs and lifestyle.

Facilitated by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA), the ‘Friends of Bhit Island’ support the Government Primary & Secondary School in Bhit Island, and organize motivational and interactive events as a regular feature in which cross sections of Karachi’s philanthropists engage with their less fortunate brethren.
